Behindr is a photo and video editor that places text behind the subject of your pictures. This policy explains what happens to your data when you use the app. The short version: your photos and videos never leave your device, and we don’t collect any personal information about you. The app does send an anonymous count of which screens get used, with no identifier attached and nothing about your pictures — you can turn that off in About Behindr. And if you choose to write to us using Report a problem, the note you type is sent so we can fix what you are describing.
Everything Behindr does — detecting the subject, cutting it out, placing your text, applying looks, and exporting the finished image or video — happens entirely on your iPhone using Apple’s on-device technology. Your photos and videos are never uploaded to us or to any server. We never see them, store them, or share them.
No personal information. Behindr has no user accounts and no sign-in. We do not collect your name, email, address, phone number, location or contacts. There is no advertising, no third-party analytics company and no tracking software of any kind in the app, and we do not sell or share data with anybody.
The one thing we do count is anonymous usage totals, so we can
tell which parts of the app people get stuck on. When something happens that is
worth counting — the app opening, a picture loading, a picture being saved, the
Pro screen being viewed, an export failing — the app adds one to a running total
on a server we run ourselves. Each message contains only the name of the thing
that happened, the app’s version and the major version of iOS. For example:
photo_saved, 1.3, iOS 26. That is the whole message.
Nothing identifies you, because there is nothing to identify you with. There is no advertising identifier, no device identifier, no account, no randomly generated install ID and no session token, and we do not log IP addresses. Nothing links one count to another or to you, so these totals cannot be traced back to a person — not by us, and not by anyone who obtained the database. They are tallies, not a record of your activity. They are never combined with data from any other company, which is why the app does not ask you to allow tracking.
Never counted: your photos and videos, anything about them (size, filename, date, what is in them), and the words you type onto them. Those never leave your device at all. If the app crashes we count that a crash happened — we do not send the crash report itself, because that is the one part which could contain a fragment of your picture.
You can switch this off. Tap the ••• button, choose About Behindr, and turn off “Share anonymous usage counts”. Nothing is sent from then on, and the app works exactly the same.
Behindr has a Report a problem sheet, reachable from the Home screen, from About Behindr, and from the message the app shows you when something has just gone wrong. It exists because a counter can tell us that an export failed and can never tell us what you saw.
It only ever sends anything when you type a note and tap Send. Nothing about it runs in the background, and if you open the sheet, read it and close it again, nothing has been sent.
What is sent is the short list the sheet itself shows you
before you send it: the note you wrote; which part of the app you were using
when it went wrong; the version and build of Behindr you are running; your iOS
version; your device model (for example iPhone15,2); and whether
you have Behindr Pro. That last one is a yes or no, not a receipt. The part of
the app is recorded as one word from a fixed list, such as
video_export_failed — it is not a record of what you were doing in
the app generally. Nothing else is attached — no name, no email address,
no account (Behindr has none), no advertising or device identifier, and nothing
that could be used to link your note to any other note or to any of the
anonymous counts described above.
What is never sent: your photo, your video, your drafts, your cutout, and the words you typed onto your picture. Reporting a problem does not upload the picture you were working on. If the bug is something you can only show us, tell us in words and we will ask.
Your note goes to a small server we run ourselves on Cloudflare — not to any third-party support, ticketing or analytics company, and not to anyone who sells data. It is kept so we can act on it and is deleted automatically after 400 days. Only the developer reads it. The server limits how many notes can be sent from one connection each minute in order to stop abuse; to do that it uses a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address which it cannot turn back into the original and does not store alongside your note.
If you are offline when you tap Send, the note waits on your device and is sent the next time you open Behindr with a connection. The sheet tells you when this has happened rather than pretending the note has gone.
Please don’t include anything in the note you would not want us to have. It is a free-text box, so what ends up in it is your choice — if you type your name or your email address into it, we will receive that too. You are welcome to include an email address if you would like a reply, and equally welcome not to.
Behindr does not collect, use, store, share, sell, transfer, or retain face data or any other biometric data. The app performs no face detection, no face recognition, no face mapping and no facial-geometry analysis, and it never creates a faceprint, face template or any other identifier derived from a person’s face.
To place your text behind a subject, Behindr asks Apple’s on-device Vision framework for a segmentation mask: a black-and-white outline marking which pixels belong to the foreground subject and which belong to the background. This mask is a silhouette. It contains no facial measurements, it identifies nobody, and it cannot be used to recognise a person or to tell two people apart. It works the same way on a pet, a chair or a coffee cup as it does on a person.
That mask is produced entirely on your device and is never transmitted off it. It is held in memory while you edit and discarded when you close the photo or the app. If you choose to save a draft, that draft is written only to Behindr’s private storage on your own device and is deleted when you delete the draft. No mask, photograph or video is uploaded to us or to anyone else, none of it is shared with any third party, and there is no server-side retention of any of it. The only things the app ever sends are the anonymous counters and, if you choose to write one, a problem report — and neither contains anything derived from your pictures.
When you choose a photo or video to edit, iOS shows it to the app through the system photo picker. When you tap Save, Behindr asks your permission to add the finished image or video back to your photo library. Behindr only adds the items you export — it does not read, browse, or upload the rest of your library.
Behindr offers a one-time “Pro” unlock that removes the watermark. Purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see or store your payment details. Apple processes the transaction and tells the app whether the unlock is active. Apple’s handling of your purchase is covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Behindr does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children. The only thing it sends is an anonymous tally that identifies nobody of any age, so the app is safe to use at any age, subject to the App Store’s age requirements.
